The seemingly benign process denies the force with which the piece was made, every "flower" was rammed into the natural fissures of the tree with a chisel, and yet seem to be bursting out.

_bow3167.jpg

_bow3175.jpg

_bow3172.jpg

To Propitiate.

Title: To Propitiate.

Medium: Sculpture.

Materials: Found tree part, torn strips of sheeting, PVA glue, car spray paint.

Inspiration for this piece came from the Clootie trees, in ancient Britain there was a superstition that if a cloth (cloot) was wiped on a diseased or afflicted body part and tied to a tree then the tree would take on the suffering of its owner and his ailment would be cured. In To Propitiate the same “offering up” of cloths is subverted by being made upside down, this intervention results in an organic, plant like structure, although there are clear references to the abject in the cut off “limbs” of the tree, bandage pattern and repetition of knots, all alluding to a feminine history of washing, wiping, caring and even tearing up sheets for bandages.

To Objectify

Title: To Objectify

Medium: Sculpture/Assemblage/Installation.

Materials: Vintage found objects, brass lady bells, ink well, ceramic Laydee teapots and table brushes, a toilet roll cover.

To Objectify

Title: To Objectify (detail)

Medium: Sculpture/Assemblage/Installation.

Materials: Vintage found objects, brass lady bells, ink well, ceramic Laydee teapots and table brushes, a toilet roll cover.

To Objectify.

Title: To Objectify

Medium: Sculpture/Assemblage/Installation.

Materials: Vintage found objects, brass lady bells, ink well, ceramic Laydee teapots and table brushes, a toilet roll cover.

Description:

Continuing exploration of the feminine, drawing attention to cultural and literal objectification of women through their representation as functional objects. Inpiration came from the new ways of display brought about by Ebay. The objects are all quietly domestic and sit passively under the radar. The contemporary and ironic classification of such objects as kistch, allows their harmless cultural processing whilst denying their more disturbing aspects. Viewed retrospectively as a collective, takes them out of their present context, and and highlights the insidious nature and process of objectification.

To Augment 4 (detail)

To Augment 4 (detail)

To Augment 4

Date: 2011

Materials: taxidermy; parrot, rooster, marabou and pheasant feathers, lamp stand, paint.

Part of an installation based on the verb: To Augment relating to the largely feminine practices of hair and nail extention and the use of prosthetics to enlarge and augment the female body, in line with cultural ideals and expectations.
