Ruth Geldard Artist’s Statement
Curiosity regarding the possibility of a feminine phenomenology with regard to materials evidenced in my own practice as certain behaviours revealed in the process, began the research. Recognition of this feminine sensibility within the selection, handling and manipulation of objects and materials, continues to drive the practice.
Physical experimentation into the nature and behaviour of materials and processes, affords a naturally rich, cognitive space in which ideas can be tempered. Each series of work begins with the intuitive selection of a particular and necessary verb, this literary imposition acts as a structure and constraint, in the manner of Richard Serra.
Whilst stressing the materiality of the work, it is the behavioural processes that define it rather than the end product, which is simply evidence of the intervention.
